Turnip greens are the leafy part of the turnip root and, along with collard greens and mustard greens, are held in high esteem in the Deep South. Stripling's Mean Jean 3-Pepper Hot Sauce must be on hand whenever you decide to cook up 'a mess of greens', which is the affectionate phrasing for a big bunch of greens. Our hot sauce gives them a nice jolt, as shown in this turnip recipe (below).
Mean Jean Turnip Greens
- 3 lbs. fresh turnip greens, rinsed and drained
- 6 c. of water
- 3 Tbsp. butter or bacon grease
- 1 1/2 Tbsp. sugar
- 3 tsp. Stripling's Mean Jean 3-Pepper Hot Sauce*
Directions:
Tear turnips into bite-sized pieces. Pour water into large stock pot or Dutch oven. Add the greens, butter (or bacon grease), and sugar to the pot. Bring to a boil. Cover and cook over medium heat for the next 45 minutes, or until greens are tender. Add in the hot sauce during this simmer time, so that hot sauce flavor can assimilate. *1(5 ounce) bottle of Stripling's Mean Jean's 3-Pepper Hot Sauce will meet the recipe requirement and leave a nice amount remaining for other uses!
